Originally named Pecks Beach, Ocean City was once the staging spot for John Peck's whaling operation. At various times in its history, the island also served as a summer fishing camp for local native tribes and as grazing land for cattle driven out from the mainland. Occasionally the island was a hunting or picnic spot for mainlanders visiting by boat. Ocean City was linked to the mainland by bridge in 1883 and railroad soon followed. This newfound accessibility brought quick growth and change to the community.

Today, the Ocean City Division of Recreation offers a wide selection of programs for both children and adults including summer sports camps, basketball leagues and aquatic and fitness programs. Residents can also play golf at the town's par-3 course or at one of the many world-class courses only minutes from Ocean City. Tennis enthusiasts can play at any one of the town's public courts. The excitement doesn't stop when the sun goes down – Ocean City residents are just a short drive from all the fun and excitement of Atlantic City.
